We lost an ocean champion yesterday. Jean Beasley, 90, started North Carolina's first sea turtle hospital and saved over 1,500 turtles.

She was a school teacher with no other training. By the time she died, she had co-authored a half dozen veterinary science papers on sea turtle rehabilitation.

Better Know a Bird: the Remarkable Migration of the Secretive Sora You wouldn’t know it by their football-shaped bodies and awkward flight, but Soras cover more ground than any other North American rail.

Did you hear a whistle in the wetland?This mysterious marsh bird is known more for its call than its sightings. Part of the rail family, Soras feed on beetles, crayfish, snails, and spiders and are adept at hiding in dense vegetation as they distribute their weight over their thin, long feet.

I feel like I write a small obituary for each bird I find. I research them and find out how far they migrate, what they eat, where they live, and share that with the public. It’s my way of honoring them and coping through the emotional loss.

Another busy rescue day! Live rescues included a Dark-Eyed Junco, Red-breasted Nuthatch, and a Tennessee warbler. Salvages included Ovenbirds, Black-throated green warbler, and a Blackpoll Warbler. Keep calling CBCM if you find something - 773 988 1867

Yes! And they are big enough to notice and to accidentally disturb. They were eating well in the garden beds. So fascinating to watch them spin their webs with the distinctive zigzag.

It was so still and calm when I rescued it.

Rescued a Red-breasted Nuthatch that started to feel better! Will need to double bag this buddy for transport to Wildlife Rehabilitation for a check up.

Some say she was a Peace Corps member, but the school opened until 8 years before the Peace Corps existed. When we discovered the school’s official history was inaccurate, we applied for a National Geographic Society grant to turn our heritage mystery into a classroom curriculum.

Nearly four years ago, we started searching for Nellie E. Brown. It’s the name of a public school in Olongapo, Zambales in the Philippines where my friend’s dad went to school. Everyone in town had a different theory about Nellie’s identity, and Google searches led us to improbable Nellies.

Last Friday I found a bird I haven’t seen in the wild yet! This female Belted Kingfisher was downtown across from a manmade waterfall. These majestic fliers reside in Chicago all year round. #birdcollision #kingfisher
