I'm sure you're right, but Obama's friendship with Rashid Khalidi and their years of deep discussion really should've counted for more. Imagine being friends with a scholar like that and yet still keeping normal dem Israel policy!?

She never had any counter arguments beyond "it is so complicated" but now I see how some of her anger was over a perceived loss of epistemic authority when I decided to go straight to the source.

Your comments here help explain something that had been puzzling me. I ended a friendship with an American Jewish woman over Gaza. She was outraged that I'd spend time reading Israeli media, using Google translate, looking into public opinion polls.

Yay silks! I did silks and rope long ago and recently started flying trap.

That's cool, what kind of aerialist are you?

You're one of the most insightful writers on Palestine I've ever seen and I've read a fair bit in that area but certainly, we're all just people.

Holy shit this means a lot coming from a writer I idolize!

We've known about operator syndrome for years now, watching 22 service members kill themselves every single day for the last 23 years but we have no plans for treating it or preventing it in the future. We absolutely haven't reckoned with the ethical implications of damaging 150K people like this.

There's a more favorable comparison. Consider all the soldiers who developed operator syndrome during GWOT. Suicide bombing kills you dead, but operator syndrome leaves you to spend years as the walking dead before you destroy your family and commit suicide and maybe kill some of them too.

Part of his reasoning is that despite his best efforts, grok (and other LLMs) have consistently been too woke. By making an un-woke Wikipedia clone, he can train the next generation of grok without wokeness infecting it from the start.

Er, outrage not outage.

Perhaps the issue was fear of donor outage rather than mere voters punishing Dems on election day.

Absolutely! And it is brain breaking to realize that among the tech finance journalists, EZ is actually really good because his competition are also not brilliant scholars.

That really is super unfair. And he's kind of a jerk. But that's not the same as being a grifter or a crook!

It reminds me of all the people who can't accept that Trump, a profoundly stupid narcissist, has a bunch of skills that he's leveraged to vast wealth and power.

28.10.2025 17:23 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It kinda feels like all this is downstream of the brutal unfairness that a bunch of really really smart scholars have been sounding the alarm for years and have only been punished for doing so while this dumb guy has made bank talking about related issues.

I know someone at Amazon who left because part of the compensation for high performers was the freedom to abuse other people. He wasn't interested in doing that and got tired of being a target for those who were.

Katie WTF?!?! I went climbing this morning and usually I have to retie my climbing shoes every 15 minutes but I tried Ian's secure knot and they stayed tight the whole time! How are you like this?

Why would you ever need an LLM to predict users' next orders? Can't you just use boring statistical methods that any stats undergrad could explain?

The NYT has published some decent pieces about the oppression of trans people, sometimes even on the front page. And I can point to former journalists and editors from the NYT who say that the institution is transphobic and that the transphobia comes from the top.

15.10.2025 18:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah sometimes they put stories on the front page and that's great, but a front page story cannot by itself prove that an institution isn't absurdly biased! We need methods of evaluation that go deeper than "have you ever posted a front page story on this topic".

15.10.2025 18:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Just because they occasionally report out stories like this doesn't mean that the institutions aren't biased to the point of actively deceiving their audience on the regular.

15.10.2025 17:26 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

You're right that the media really does report this stuff. But occasionally including a story on page A17 doesn't change the fact that the news ecosystem makes all sorts of framing and editorial decisions to not emphasize these facts.

Interesting. I wonder if this is the same Greg Stoker as the retired US Army Ranger who turned anti imperialist and posted hilarious videos criticizing IDF military incompetence.

and when they inevitably fail, the abuse is their fault. Did some trans person utilize narrative compression that literally everyone uses all the time? Everything is their fault! But Kirk is an angel.

There's also commonly golden child vs scapegoat dynamics in those families.

13.09.2025 16:05 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I've been thinking that a lot of screwed up writing about Kirk's death seems rooted in abusive family dynamics. Specifically how the whole family unit contorts itself around the idea that the abuser isn't responsible for their actions so everyone else has to make a superhuman effort...

Tis not exactly what you're asking about but I found this piece by a professor of religious studies who studies people's obsession with naturalism to be surprisingly insightful: www.huffpost.com/entry/gun-cu...

People get better with practice right? EY has written so many words, how is his writing still so bad? Is he too arrogant for criticism or is he surrounded by tasteless sycophants?

19.08.2025 18:39 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I wonder if this is an example of a larger trend where American mediocrity and low quality execution lead to chronic totally unnecessary anxiety which is then easily weaponized by authoritarians to target small minority groups....
