Our paper on how phonetic resources help to coordinate laughter draws on cases of joint laughter from conversations in English, Spanish and Finnish. Here's a summary of some of our findings (which rely heavily on Chafe, 2007), along with acoustic records of a laughter bout in Spanish.

I don't know about a moral but you can trust me to go all mystical with this and yes, 5 and deer do go together quite interestingly apparently according to those "in the know".

Was having a bit of a grumpy day and decided to go for a walk in the small local woods (only 10 mins away on foot from home!) while videocalling my mum, and we got the very rare sighting of 5 deer. If I hadn't gasped and screamed in excitement I would've taken a picture, but I scared them away.

Letting go of the useless scenarios of what could've been of my envisioned research career if I hadn't had to worry about precarity for so long and hadn't worked so hard to try to stay where I clearly wasn't meant to.
Live and learn. It'll take long, there'll be detours, but I'll bounce back.

End-of-job rituals:
The final payslip. The new autoreply. Email signature removal of an affiliation and position that once made me proud. The updating of websites and profiles. The forwarding address. The acquired wisdom that those who make the promises never have the power to make the decisions.

I've actually really enjoyed Destination X (far more than The Traitors) but they gave a big chunk of the game away on episode 1 and because I do know my airport codes (too many hours spent on Flight Radar 😅) I am positive I know what the final destination will be for the finale tomorrow 🫤.

The cringe factor is high with this one... Most of my classmates were 12 or 13 at the time so I figure their reception might have bern a bit more...puberty-y.

It sounds wild that a book about Burnout (also called “Burnout”by @enagoski.bsky.social and her sister, Amelia Nagoski, would bring joy, but it did. They even used a term called “joyfully ever after.” And that tickled me.

Heidi Puputti and I just published a paper in Human Studies, where we show how an embodied formation functions as a resource in organising joint work and facilitates joint accomplishment of the activity.

Sad and puzzling to see some departments shrinking and overloading colleagues, others with colleagues under threat of compulsory redundancy, while a couple of departments in the same institution are hiring *permanent* lecturers and a campus is being opened abroad. The joys of UK HE these days.

Finally accepting it's actually nice that for the next few months I'll only wrap up existing projects. There's some relief in knowing I don't have the external or internal pressure to develop something new. Sounds like giving up, but tbh I've burned all my matches and can't run after stuff anymore.

Redundancies are brutal, but noticeable. What's less obvious are increasing zero hours contracts, hourly paid lectureships, 12 month contracts, working for free.

What used to be available to fairly pay a speaker is now the entire departmental training budget - liable to be cut at any point.
