I love these transit safety signs I saw in London. Wish I’d snapped pics of more, but I’m sure these are available on the interwebs. But where’s the fun in that?
And BTW, you had better take care because those train doors CLOSE! #TransportForLondon #PublicSafety #GraphicDesign

Thankful that my parents didn’t die of dysentery when they moved to Oregon in the 1960s.

Ancient Roman lighthouse from about 50 CE. The Romans used the local black flint, sandstone, and reddish Roman bricks in its construction. My children for scale.

The lighthouse was originally about 24 meters tall (80 feet). From this view, there is an arched doorway and two arched windows above. My son and daughter are standing at the base of the structure.

View from the top of The White Cliffs of Dover. The path is seen in the left and is light colored due the the local chalk. In the upper left are the distinctive white cliffs. The seam is a blue-green color. Visible that day, but not apparent in the photo was France.

On our trip to the UK, my son had the idea to walk the White Cliffs of Dover beach path and visit castles along the way. The cliffs and castles did not disappoint! Of course I was really excited about all that chalk! And black flint! And black flint used in ancient buildings! #EarthScienceTeacher

I’m really good at raising one eyebrow at a time without having to show visible effort or make a silly face. Pretty sure that won’t show up when I am a fossil someday.

Drawing of cheerful dimetrodon. Inked in black and white with shading in multicolored crosshatching. Text on drawing reads β€œThis is from a dimetridon [sic…I misspelled the name of this critter] cutout mod at Hunterian museum. Original is by Vernon Edwards. Just got back from a wonderful trip the the UK with my children. Lots of museums, lots of exploring. In Glasgow we went to the #HunterianMuseum where there is a really good natural history collection on display. Including some drawings I did here. #SciArt #PaleoArt

My coteacher was a media studies major in college, so now in our Earth science classes we show related disaster movies. Is so fun, students are very engaged, and there is lots to unpack! We showed San Andreas too. Can’t wait to watch your video!

You’ll all have seen the many announcements and PR pieces from #ColossalBiosciences. There are reasons to be concerned about the general message promoted by CB, one being that it is seen >by some< (US politicians in particular) as meaning that we can devalue conservation. A 🧡 1/n

I’ve lived here for almost 40 years, but I’m from Portland. It’s a much smaller city and there is a lot of public support for climate friendly infrastructure projects as opposed to here.

All this is tough in such a big city with entrenched interests. Wealthy folks who are pretty happy with the system as is. Also I can only imagine how hard it is to make BIG changes here.

And/or…make it less convenient to drive (it already is). The transit system is already pretty decent in Manhattan. The outer boroughs need more public transit investment too. Also flooding resilience structures. But…I’ll bet there are projects in the works that I don’t know about.

29.07.2025 19:37 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yes, but also investing in a climate-resilient public transportation system will increase ridership and get more cars off the road. NYC is huge and has aging infrastructure, so the sooner the better. The city has taken major steps, but we need more still.

Not to be a party pooper, but this mighty created is also now a vital science communicator, perhaps helping to inspire some awe and wonder for the natural world in people who would not otherwise visit a natural history museum.
