Seeing lots of really STINKY flowers in the greenhouse today. #botany #cacti #cactus #plants #euphorbia
04.08.2025 19:33 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0I checked to see if the surface sterilization of my root nodules worked, and lo and behold I see that I likely have four samples that still have some kind of microbial presence. Maybe the nodules got damagedβ¦ or there were too many nooks and crannies. #labwork #science #plants #microbio
04.08.2025 17:31 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Iβve been thinking about it! Especially since I learned there were a couple of big Lupin projects in Australiaβ¦ I bet there would be good support for my research. Weβll seeβ¦
04.08.2025 04:08 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβve been growing them under a dimmer light and theyβve really been enjoying that light level! Iβm very pleased with how theyβre doing and that I can use this light for something. lol.
02.08.2025 15:40 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My firefly petunia seedlings are finally putting some flowers out! Most of this tray glows, but Iβm hoping the flowers are BRIGHT! Weβll see as soon as the flowers open.

Hereβs some cat picks for your Friday afternoon.
02.08.2025 00:37 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thankfully I personally am not affectedβ¦. Yet. I worry about if our department will be dissolved though, at the rate weβre going. Then where would my PhD program be? Not sure.
01.08.2025 00:27 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Agreed, and itβs harder and harder to write grants taking into account the new list of words and topics we canβt write for!
01.08.2025 00:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My department has been losing more and more faculty - lay offs, retirements, moving to other universities. How many faculty can we lose before the department is nonfunctional? Will we make it through 3 more years?
31.07.2025 23:02 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 3 π 0Do I see tree of heaven, some type of wild lettuce andβ¦ a grass?
31.07.2025 14:57 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My research involves lupine root nodules. If youβve never seen a root nodule before, here you go! This specimen of Lupinus lepidus includes the root system and several nodules. These structures house nitrogen fixing bacteria and others. #botany #science #plants #biology
31.07.2025 14:51 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Our euphorb collection has been plagued with mealy bugβ¦ so today weβve released the destroyers. Cryptolaemus is a mealy bug specialist. #bugs #greenhouses #botany #ipm #insects #plants
30.07.2025 17:26 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0PSU also has this interesting Peace Tree on campus, which I believe is the ginkgo. Right next to the ginkgo are two suspiciously fake looking βtreesβ that Iβve recently verified are definitely alive but look very strangeβ¦ what are they?? #botany #trees #plants #portland #oregon
30.07.2025 01:05 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The Portland State Copper Beech Heritage Tree has lived through a lot of turmoil and change on this campus. Planted in the 1890s, the current library had to be built AROUND this giant. #trees #botany #plants #horticulture #portland #pdx
28.07.2025 22:30 β π 11 π 2 π¬ 2 π 0Attempt number three with a hanging glass piece from goodwill. I like how this one came out! Much less bubbling and I tried multiple layers. Inspired by @botanymanor.bsky.social logo. #painting #arts #crafts
28.07.2025 16:20 β π 13 π 2 π¬ 1 π 1Thank you! Itβs one of my favorites.
28.07.2025 14:58 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Correction, this is WASHINGTON county!
27.07.2025 23:25 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0At the Multnomah County Courthouse, these Sequoiadendron giganteum have been standing since 1880. Now at nearly 150 years old, these things are GIANTS. #trees #plants #botany #horticulture #coastalredwoods #redwoods #oregon
27.07.2025 22:35 β π 23 π 2 π¬ 3 π 0Thank you! Making these (I made several more) this past term really got me interested in making more. Iβm hoping to do a whole lupine collection with collected seed from a number of varieties.
27.07.2025 16:25 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0For me personally, itβs about the size of the plant and what would best help in ID. For Lupinus, flower morphology is super important. This plant was also very large and not in a place where I could dig up the roots.
27.07.2025 16:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0As part of my research I started learning how to prepare herbarium specimens of my research plants. Hereβs one of a Lupinus rivularis flower spike, collected from the field. Iβve also included two individual flowers with some of the keel peeled away to show the interior. #botany #science #plants
27.07.2025 16:17 β π 12 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0I would have guessed some type of gall as well. Very interesting!
27.07.2025 16:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My second attempt with the glue paint media went a little better. Fewer bubbles, but there were some spaces I had to fill in after everything dried. Still, this craft is fun and easy! Iβm liking it. #arts #creative #crafts #painting
27.07.2025 16:03 β π 6 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0I collected three seeds from one euphorb recently, and Iβm thinking about germinating them. Iβve never started euphorbs from seed though. Exciting! #plants #botany #seeds #science #gardening #portland
26.07.2025 17:01 β π 8 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0On of the other collections Iβm responsible for this summer (and beyond??) is our Euphorbiaceae collection. Iβve been seeing a lot of flowers and even some seed production happening, which is cool to see with such slow growers. #greenhouses #botany #botanicalgarden #plants
26.07.2025 15:38 β π 9 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Looking at other examples of m. spinosissima, it could be this but Iβm not 100% convinced. Identification can be so difficult! weβll have to wait for flowers to show up π©
26.07.2025 15:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Not yet! Iβve just taken over caring for this collection in the last month. Iβll be keeping my eyes open for flowers!
26.07.2025 01:18 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Calling all cacti enthusiasts! I need some identification help. Weβve lost the ID to this plant in the collection. I think it may be a type of mammillaria, but Iβm not 100% and have no guess on species. Ignore the green leaves, those are βweedsβ. Ideas? #plants #help #botany #plantscience #cactus
25.07.2025 22:19 β π 13 π 3 π¬ 3 π 0Iβve just been too busy for video games at all, and that also kept me from posting on social media a bit. Iβm pivoting for post more about my work and research since thatβs whatβs taking up my time now.
25.07.2025 19:18 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The Portland International Rose Garden should be nice, if you want to be outside, and itβs free.
