I love rewriting myself. Pulling up the previous draft in one window and a blank document in another. Retyping helps me re-inhabit the story, paying close attention to narrative rhythm and word choices. It’s not the fastest way to revise, but I can’t argue with its effectiveness.

James Gunn made Spotify playlists for some of the characters in SUPERMAN. The playlist for Clark features a lot of songs I love, and the following commentary: “Clark listens to a lot of upbeat music he thinks is edgy but is not,” and never have I felt more seen. I’m 💀

I’ve been able to kept my excitement fairly bottled till now. But today? Today I will probably be useless. Because today, I get to see SUPERMAN at 7:15.

My problem in 2025 is that I currently have enough work to be a full-time writer but not enough money. It’s a great problem to have! Unless you’re my girlfriend, or friends, or family, who love me and like to see me regularly, and to know I’m healthy and well-rested.

Easy, right? No problemo.

With my original novels and my forthcoming IP novels, I’ve checked off a bunch of bucket list items. Now all I have to do is
1. get a gig (even a TINY ONE) writing a comic book, and
2. write something for the moving pictures.
Then I can die… not happy, per se, but maybe content-ish?

Named a chapter of my WIP “Fire & Blood” and then remembered it was already the title of a George R.R. Martin Westeros book. Said “motherfucker!” Then gave the chapter a different, less good name, and moved on with my day.

This is the hard work of writing: taking things bigger than ourselves (ideas, feelings, scenes, or even technical info), and finding clear ways to communicate them to readers.

Every month at my day job, I write a short article for the company newsletter, translating technical concepts and industry standards into language that (hopefully) a layperson can understand. The final product is usually 250-500 words, but it belies the hours of study and drafting.
