ABC: Always Be Canvassing

Myself and my mother, who was a social worker in the Rotunda supporting women and families in crisis pregnancies.

I know I’m slightly behind on this story but I am happy to have reflected a bit on different points being raised before commenting, as a politician I try to avoid being reactionary so that I can make calm, considered contributions to discussions.

All parties - planners, the Council, heritage officers etc must work together to make sure a plan can be brought forward that will allow the hospital to flourish in the heart of the city - where it belongs.

Plans for a critical care wing must be resubmitted soon and an accelerated process put in place so this infrastructure can be delivered as soon as possible.

But the part of the square we should all be most proud of is the hospital - the longest serving maternity hospital in the world, supporting marginalised women and families for over 250 years and delivering almost 1 million babies (including me!).

We need to cherish the heritage of the square and ensure it is a part of the city we all can be proud of.

Parnell Square is a valuable part of Dublin’s Georgian heritage. In the coming years, it will become the Parnell Cultural Quarter home to a world class city library, the Hugh Lane Gallery as well as the Poetry Museum and the Garden of Remembrance.

In the past few years, a new premises has been opened on North Earl Street and another is due for Dominick Street - cementing its place in this part of the city.

The current government plan to relocate the hospital to Blanchardstown is not viable. It belongs in the heart of the city serving vulnerable communities as it has for over 250 years.

The board have fought for the development of the wing to deliver the standard of life-saving care in a dignified environment that women and babies need.

STATEMENT ON ROTUNDA CRITICAL CARE UNIT REFUSAL:

The refusal of planning permission for the critical care wing of the Rotunda Hospital has been bitterly disappointing, most especially for the board, which I am proud to sit on.

Community is one of the three pillars of my campaign and something I see the importance of every day in my life, it makes our city and our local areas. It’s something I really want to champion in The Dáil if elected.

We also talked about a lack of community spaces in the area, with some residents having to go out to Ballymun and other parts of Dublin for activities.

There was lots of concerns about the rainfall we’ve had this month (we know all about it, trying to schedule getting out to knock on doors around it), it can be really worrying seeing how high up the Tolka was getting, and the flooding in Griffith Park.

Two fantastic canvasses yesterday with two fantastic groups, thanks to Donna, Feljin, Hazel, Ray, and Roderic and everyone else who came out, especially those who came to both canvasses!

Thanks to everyone for the kind words on my campaign launch on Wednesday, it was the perfect midweek boost. Today I was my first canvas outside the North Inner City.

We are sickened by the reports yesterday in The Guardian that a private jet owned by one of Donald Trump’s friends was not only used to deport Palestinians back to the occupied West Bank but that this jet was allowed to fuel in Shannon Airport.

I used to get very frustrated before Marriage Ref having to constantly answer the same basic things re same sex marriage/queer people and getting the same feeling today about cycling. People really don't want to accept that cars kill people and everyone has the right to move around in public safely

We are dealing with a serious incident at the junction of Talbot Street and North Earl Street.

We are asking the public to please avoid the area.
