15.11.2024 18:18 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0My experience working with Godot so far:
1. Everything is so simple, I love it!
2. Wait, doing complex things is still hard. I dunno what I’m doing.
3. This shit sucks, I wanna go back to Unity.
4. Wait, fuck Unity, Unity sucks. Guess I’m sticking with Godot…
Repeat ad nauseam
A hand-drawn finite state machine describing enemy behavior in Indomitable Interactive’s upcoming game The Defector.
A screenshot of a finite state machine made with the YAFSM plugin for Godot. Looks almost exactly the same as the hand-drawn version. Pretty cool, huh?
Sometimes it’s easier than expected to turn your random sketch of enemy AI behavior into actual functionality in your game…

So… anyone know any game engines other than Godot? (I want to ditch Unity after what they pulled last year) Or maybe a good tutorial for it? I’ll pay if I have to.
I did the one on Gamedev.tv and thought I knew what I was doing. Now I’m working on a game and it turns out I don’t…

A sheet of paper with a variety of incomprehensible scribbles relating to Rutabaga Desert Storm by Indomitable Interactive. There is a diagram detailing the sizes of the different background layers and text explaining how each layer moves at a different speed, but moves off screen at the same time due to the size differences. There is a blurb at the top mentioning that the GameManager class will not handle power-ups. The text “Bug: Wave never despawns” has been boxed and crossed out. I fixed it! “KILL STREAKS! ACCURACY REPORT LIKE GALAGA” is written in all caps at the bottom. I never implemented those features…
The reverse side of the paper, detailing how a Unity ScriptableObject is used to hold the current game rules. In this case, the rules are simply how many players there are, and which one is Rutabaga III and which one is Habanero, Jr. There is another diagram below it written sideways (detailed in the next image)
Another diagram attempting to explain the background mechanics. If it’s not obvious, we struggled a lot with this! The sizes of each background layer are shown, this time for the village area. Below that, some functions and interfaces for the menu code are written very sloppily. IMenuItem is an interface that has a SetSelected function, which takes a bool and returns nothing (void). MenuHeader has a List of IMenuItem objects. The MainMenuManager handles actual user input.
Sometimes when you’re working on a game, you just have to write stuff down on paper for it to make sense. These are some random incomprehensible scribbles from Rutabaga Desert Storm’s development. Anyone else do this?

It is a little hard to make everything out in a static image. But when everything’s moving, stuff looks a little more distinct.
Thanks for checking it out! If you do end up buying the game, please leave a review and let us know what you think!
