As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
• Figure out a small way to help someone
• Figure out a small way to fight back
• Figure out a small place to find joy
• Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

A gang of unknown masked men waving big guns, yelling, warning bystanders to stand back as they aggressively grab Latino-looking people off the street or out of their cars.

Are you watching a kidnapping or a legal immigration detention?

my view is that everyone should be able to earn a living wage doing whatever it is they like. if you love working in a bookshop, you should be able to live a comfortable life doing so. if you loving being a barista, the same. and if you want to do more traditional blue collar work, that’s cool too!

This is why I hate the emergence of a legal literature that undermines the plain text. The Citizenship Clause was created precisely to moot the debate. These newly fabricated theories and deeply problematic histories of citizenship were a central part of what the 14th Amendment was intended to stop.

Many products sold in the U.S. are made in El Salvador. In response to the El Salvador president’s statements today, we’re calling for an immediate boycott of all Salvadoran-made goods. Please help by listing any products or brands made in El Salvador in the comments below.

They don’t care.

They don’t care that the Supreme Court ruled 9-0 to bring an innocent man home to his family.

They don’t care.

They think it’s funny.

Bone chilling.

A court ordered Kilmar Abrego Garcia to stay in the United States.

The Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that he was illegally removed. Trump is pretending he won the ruling 9-0.

1/ You may not think this case means anything to you. But let me tell you why it does.

If the U.S. government is going to take the position that, once removed from the United States, folks can’t be brought back, then it sure seems to me that federal courts should be reflexively and categorically barring *all* removals until they’re 100 percent certain that the removals are lawful.

The World Suddenly Has a Plausible Alternative to US Treasuries In the first rush for safe havens in years, global investors are finding there are credible alternatives to US Treasury bonds.

Again, I get why people don't take things Trumps says at face value because, well, he lies all the time and says lots of things. BUT one thing he's really be consistent about - in the same way he's been on consistent about tariffs - is that the dollar is overvalued

Wow. @mattcameron.bsky.social suggests that somehow ICE has gotten the ability to delete cases from the immigration court’s central database, something they obviously should not be able to do. It’s not clear if we’re talking about some form of technical glitch or something deliberate.

The debate over whether to take Trump literally or seriously is over. He has now learnt how to be the tyrant he always wished to be.
That took a while. But, with the help he has received, he is there. His administration is engaged in a comprehensive assault on the American republic and the global order it created. Under attack domestically are the state, the rule of law, the role of the legislature, the role of the courts, the commitment to science and the independence of the universities. All these were the pillars on which US freedom and prosperity rested.
Now, he is destroying the liberal international order. Soon, I presume, Trump will be invading countries, as he proceeds to restore the age of empires.

So to combat the jobs we have lost to China, I am proposing what I call "Colbert Opportunity Zones"- regulation-free areas to be set up across the country.
THE MINIMUM
Businesses would be free to employ whomever they want, to do whatever they need. If vou

can fit in a mineshaft, you have a job. If you
THE PROUD
make it back out, you have a career. This lack

of regulation will lead to countless steady, good-paying jobs, a booming economy, and
TRADITION OF THE
Thunderdomes where drifters fight to the
SWEATSHOP. YOU START death with broken umbrella handles. 13
PAYING WORKERS A
Imagine a country without unions. Where
MINIMUM WAGE, THE
every American has the opportunity to
NEXT THING YOU KNOW
compete with a 7-year-old for a job. Every morning, each American would go to work.
THEY'RE DEMANDING
Every night, many of them would retum.
AIR-CONDITIONING
But I promise you this: the on-job fatality
AND LESS FLAMMABLE
rate would never outgrow the birth rate.
SHIRTWAIST MATERIALS.
And isn't that what's truly important?
The children?

this is a good post and "decadence" is a good way to think about a lot of things. true decadence is, eg, thinking you could let an insurrection go unpunished and the country would just keep chugging along nbd

Here's a bright idea; rather than toss aside the foundational principles of our country because "due process too hard," let's do what Congress did when faced with this issue multiple times in the past; create a path to legal status for those in the country already, allowing us to clear backlogs.

From inside the DoD:

“Schumer's bungling over the past two months & creation of this lose-lose scenario is a complete dereliction of his duties.
This was the sole moment where they had any real potential leverage to stand up and fight for the Constitution & they completely blew it from day 1.”

"The idea that we should live in a country where Marco Rubio can remove a Green Card holder because he doesn't like his views and they're against 'US foreign policy'... that's outrageous. And there was a time when the Republican Party would have been against that, but not today."

As clear a sign as any that congressional Dems either don’t fully grasp or are incapable of confronting the constitutional crisis.
