“And now to-day has come along.
With rifle, haversack, and pack,
We're off, a hundred thousand strong.
And some of us will not come back.
But all we ask, if that befall,
Is this. Within your hearts be writ
This single line memorial:
He did his duty and his bit!”

Fun history fact!

The sailors of the Pennsylvania Navy fired chain shot into the flank of advancing German infantry at the Battle of Red Bank in 1777.

Which really isn’t that fun. I guess it’s a fact though.

Some photos of the 1re armée #OnThisDay and several following during the Third Battle of Ypres. The armée, under the command of général François Anthoine, took part in the battle alongside Gough's 5th Army until operations dwindled down in November.

81 years ago, Leclerc and the French 2nd Armored Division (2e Division Blindée) return to France. Landing in Normandy on Utah Beach, many had not been on French soil since 1940. They join the American 3rd Army under Patton. From Utah Beach, they start on the road that will lead to Paris.

On July 28th, 1932, the US Army destroyed the camps of the Bonus Army in Washington D.C. These #WWI veterans had been promised a bonus payout in 1945. However, the Great Depression had made many unable to feed their families. Requesting an early payout, they were forcibly removed. #OTD.

L'utilisation du mot « yankee » semble en soi confirmer l'orientation politique de l'auteur, à moins qu'il ne s'agisse d'un usage typiquement français sorti de son contexte américain.

For the record, I was the education coordinator for the organization which built this, and myself and other historians, plus art historians opposed it the entirety of the way. Am I proud there is now a national memorial to WWI? Absolutely. Am I happy that it turned out this way? Absolutely not.
