From the Forecast Discussion from Baltimore/Washington office. Do not underestimate the cold coming for tomorrow!

Extreme Cold Warnings for western MD mountains, Baltimore/DC metros, & lower/Eastern Shore. Cold Weather Advisories for the rest of the state. This will be a particularly unusual and highly impactful event. Prolonged period (24+ hours) of sub-zero wind chills and gusty winds. Lingering snow/ice on the ground could hamper clean-up/repair efforts. Strong winds could lead to power outages. Dress in layers, keep pets indoors as much as possible, and make frequent checks on older family, friends and neighbors.

Coldest Air This Winter Season late tonight into Sunday morning. Widespread sub-zero zero wind chills across most of the area late tonight into Sunday morning. Frostbite/hypothermia likely to occur in 30 minutes or less.

Wind chills of 20 to 30 below zero are expected over the mountains with -5 to -15 below wind chills cross the Baltimore/DC metro areas.

Winds rapidly increase from west to east behind cold front between 1AM and 7AM tonight into Saturday morning. Strong winds continue through Saturday afternoon and evening.

Dangerously cold temps arrive tonight through Sunday, with Sat (Feb. 7) the worst. Daytime highs in the 20s, teens & single digits overnight, with wind chills even colder.

Intense cold front carrying season’s most frigid air to sweep into area late Friday, setting the stage for potentially damaging winds Saturday and dangerously low wind chills through much of the weekend.

Just to add, anyone traveling tomorrow should consider avoiding the bridges over the Susquehanna. With winds funneling down the river valley, would not be surprised if the bridges go under travel restrictions.

It will be dangerously cold and windy on Saturday. Plan ahead now to avoid travel and be ready for any potential power issues.

I still remember 1994 and being in State College when it hit -19º. Penn State was still holding classes until the governor ordered them to close due to, not directly for the cold, but because of statewide power-grid problems.

One of those events I still remember was where I was. In this case, I was home from school due to the cold, which in those days in Pennsylvania was very rare.
