I remember a bush campaign ad with a woman who had probably never been to a dentist standing in front of a ramshackle mobile home railing against “death taxes “something her entire nuclear family’s combined income for generations would never reach the point where it would impact them.

The door was open to this by major changes in tax policy. High income tax rates, coupled with inheritance taxes were designed to prevent another gilded age, but that has been steadily eroded since the Reagan administration.
