Today is the National Suicide Memorial Day for Health and Care Workers. Please join us in a minute of silence to pay tribute to the colleagues, friends, and loved ones we have tragically lost. #NSMD #HopeThroughAction

Today is National Suicide Memorial Day for Health and Care Workers. We launched this day a year ago to act as a permanent point in the calendar where we could remember friends, colleagues and family members who had struggled with their mental health and who we had lost to suicide. We hope this day serves a way to reflect and honour those people and their vocation, but also importantly acts as a beacon of hope for anyone who is finding life difficult right now and needs to know there are people who care and can help.

We would encourage every member of the workforce today to take a moment to look around them, notice how they and their team are doing, to offer a time and place to sit down and talk, and offer hope through those small actions of support and understanding.

The 17th of September is the National Suicide Memorial Day for Health and Care Workers. Today, will remember those we have tragically lost, reflect on their lives, and take action to help create a future where no more lives are lost to suicide. #NSMD #HopeThroughAction

NHS staff are still traumatised by the pandemic Despite their continuing levels of severe distress, funding has now been withdrawn from mental health hubs.

To write this @newstatesman.com column, I asked colleagues about their enduring memories of working on Covid wards.

Their messages, sent as voicenotes, had one thing in common: each respondent broke down in tears.

What does that rawness mean for today's NHS? ๐Ÿงต

Covid-19 Day of Reflection. Health and care workers across the country will each have a story to tell of their experiences and memories of the Covid-19 pandemic, whether that was struggles with lockdown; having to acclimatise to the sight of half faces in masks; postponed weddings and online funerals; having to work harder than ever, readjusting working lives as they dealt with the loss and mourning of patients and colleagues (particularly those from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds who were disproportionately affected). We may have dealt with the illness itself, but its lasting impact has stayed with us long after the acute infection passed.

In the last four years, we have seen sustained high levels of staff accessing treatment to deal with anxiety, stress, depression, and symptoms of burnout. More than 6,500 each year have needed help, and given the unrelenting pressure health and care staff have been exposed to, it is perhaps surprising that more have not become unwell.

Importantly though, health and care staff are some of the most resilient people around, and have always stepped up to meet challenges.

This day of reflection provides an opportunity for all health and care staff to remember what we been through and those we have lost; to connect with our colleagues and offer compassion to one another for those shared experiences, and to look back on all we have achieved since. - Lucy Warner, Chief Executive
