The industry is burning out because it's fucking stupid to think studios with 1000 people working on one AAAA Game will lift the boats, then blame poor metrics and layoff 200 employees who were only following board executive orders for a saturated market.

That's not even getting into the fact that games back then would have so much physical hardware that needed to be manufactured, and transport logistics was the SOLE means of distribution.

Yes, games cost a lot back then. They got more popular though as third party resellers made them cheaper.

Sure, have a game cost $100, but don't then have deluxe dlc passes and need 6 patches for it to be presentable.

Or, hear me out, examine why more and more indie/smaller games are thriving more than the Xbox live golden era of indies.

The fucking stupid take on this is, sure, games are "cheap." But 1) Most companies subsidize this with cutting content for DLC, rushing development times, general shitty practices.

2) more people are spending more in the industry than ever before. Games used to be a luxury hobby item.

I think that's valid. To me, it read more like a person learning to speed run Dark Souls. The author said the idea came from the inevitability of victory in video games if you had infinite lives/chances.
