Yes, the beast of the Abyssal Chasm(tm) procreated, labouring to produce progeny whose coming was heralded by a great and mighty storm. Inexplicably, they share few physical characteristics.

I’m teaching a class about STAR TREK! Next month I’ll explore how Trek reflects America’s β€œprogressive” ideals in each era and how that both expands and limits how we imagine the future. It’s part of Goddard Spark, a program born from Goddard College’s 1940s anti-fascist roots. Learn more below!

First page of the INTERSTELLAR MECHANICS article "From Marvick to Brhams." The spread photo is an image of the first six starfleet starships named Enterprise from the NX-01 to the "new" Galaxy-class NCC-1701-D. The subtitle of the article is "Making the Galaxy a Smaller Place."

The article was published a month before the launch of the Enterprise-D. In traditional POPULAR MECHANICS fashion, some details are omitted or altered for brevity or national security. ;)

As a complete package, the Trafalgar doesn’t do anything, but I do really dig how they gave each pair of nacelles a single bussard collector grill. I think the original Atlas would have looked great with a similar approach.

I embarrassingly admit that it took longer than it should have to cotton onto what you were doing. Luckily the indignation was replaced with reason before I opened my mouth and crammed my whole foot in.

Having access to a 35 ton machine (Puma) capable of dropping anything 45 tons and lighter in a single well-placed salvo from well outside the opfor’s own engagement range, is terrifying. Either way you play it, PGI did a great job of highlighting the disparity of tech bases. 2/2

Continuing the thought from earlier about Shadow of Kerensky, having access to omnimechs early on (play it straight the first time, then have fun on the second playthrough) really alters the dynamics of early missions. They feel less like pitched battles as they do executions. 1/2

Taking a break from the wretched hellscape that is world news by pretending to be a mech-driving mercenary of the 31st century… If you haven’t played Mechwarrior 5’s newest DLC, what are you waiting for?

Consider this your invitation in writing. Do it. Right now.

Closeup shot of the primary hull of the USS Enterprise from the opening of STAR TREK BEYOND by Double Negative (DNEG).

According to VFX Supervisor Peter Chiang: "Justin [Lin] wanted to attain a definite 35mm Panavision camera lens feelβ€”but not as β€˜flare-y’ as the Abrams visionβ€”with plenty of camera artifacting that would help convey a grainy grittiness on a subconscious level. We also took the opportunity to give fans close looks at parts of the ship they’ve never previously seen from these angles, a way to pay tribute to the fantastically original design of the TV ship."

A fine example of this is the Black & Decker group, which has grown to include Black & Decker, Porter Cable, DeWalt, Stanley, Stanley Bostitch, Delta, (including the assets of Beaver
and Rockwell), Mac Tools, Irwin, and Craftsman, amongst others.
