I agree with the authors and think if there is no malpractice one should not "retract". I prefer a "special interest correction" be issued in exceptional cases like this, including by the journal without the authors' consent.

We don't know how/when the outdoor environment suppresses these deleterious phenotypes, or if outdoor conditions exist that fail to suppress them. It is worth noting there are interacting peptides that could be involved pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37995686/

We really tried to make the greenhouse as similar to the field as we could. Same field soil, no supplementary light, top watering with distilled water to allow for droplet splashing. Indoors always brought out the worst in these plants.

But the always-robust phenotype vanished in field conditions, and so did the easy project. Vanished visually and molecularly. And there were no microbiome differences in the field between plants with this hyperactive allele and a standard one.

A common and natural allele of the conserved gene ACD6 in Arabidopsis gave plants anti-disease superpowers in lab tests, but made them small. A growth-defense tradeoff. As someone with skills in microbiome science, I wanted to see exactly which microbes would be affected in true field conditions.
