This week at an event for THE PEOPLE’S PROJECT, a reader asked in a gracious and cheeky way what I would hope white readers in particular would get out of the book. Or more directly, what I would TELL white readers. And this was basically my answer:

African-Americans are experts on America.

As you get older, try to keep an open mind for what younger people enjoy, and engage with it how you can. This is easier the more you do. You'll enjoy a wider band of stuff, younger people who need you will find you more approachable, and you won't turn into a "in my day" grump.

Black Lives Matter was the last true bastion against fascism that posed a real threat to what the regime is now

And instead of supporting it, many of you “both sides’d” it because of your loyalty to carcerality and lack of imagination

It's interesting watching people realize their favorite megastar isn't as progressive as they initally thought. Meanwhile, Black folk aren't remotely surprised. We're not even gonna hold your hand when we tell you this 😒

I mean really so what if you don't think we live under fascism at this point. Who cares. In slavery white folks felt everything in America was hunky dory. You're not in the crosshairs of fascism, you're not under oppression, so you don't think it's that bad, you ain't in the club, go be over there.

No you cannot have just one more and function tomorrow

Start stretching. Stop drinking. (I said what I said.) Find a non work-related hobby. Invest in friendships, your partner/spouse should not be your only friend. Be kind to yourself. It's never to late to go to therapy. Travel solo, don't wait for the right time or right person.

If you can afford a retirement account, do it. To hell with the grind. Get a boring or weird little hobby. Make time for your friends. Stop caring about cringe. Watch bad movies. Read silly books. Fuck vocational awe. Treat yourself. Tylenol and advil are your new besties. Wear good shoes.
