For me, this Black History Month has been a time to reflect on what Black Americans have done to secure democracy for everyone, particularly here in my home state. We cannot and will not let their works and sacrifices be forgotten.

The public availability of these files came along at a time when many people in power hoped that collective amnesia about the violence of the segregationist movement would set in. Thankfully many institutions in Mississippi committed to transparency and honesty. Why? To keep history from repeating.
