The decadal averages are shown with different colored lines with purple for the 1980s, blue for the 1990s, green for the 2000s, and white for the 2010s. Thin white lines are also shown for each year from 2000 to 2024. 2025 is shown with a thick gold line. There is a long-term decreasing trend in ice extent for every day of the year shown on this graph between August and November by looking at the decadal average line positions.

Hurricane Imelda moved quickly over Bermuda, with winds up to 100mph at its peak. Still uncertain if it officially made "landfall," but this small island may have benefitted from being on the left side of the storm as it moves almost 30mph!

02.10.2025 03:00 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0From Hurricane #Imelda today. Strong winds create a streaking effect on the ocean surface. Was about 65 kts here so this is hurricane force. Eventually upgraded to Cat 2 during the mission. Should pack a decent punch to Bermuda tonight.

There have been twelve Atlantic Cat 5 hurricanes in the nine years after this satellite image.
A chart of "Major concerns of PhD candidates." The top text says, "Financial pressures top the list of concerns faced by PhD candidates, but concerns differ among the sexes. Those studying in the United States rank the political landscape as their main worry." The chart shows that in the full survey, political landscape is the biggest concern for about 20% of students (a bit higher for women than men) but there's an annotation saying "In US PhD students, this rose to 64%". Overall, the highest-rated concern was financial pressures at around 40%.
That's quite the chart annotation.

Hurricane #Imelda has rapidly intensified over the last 24 hours, reaching 95mph about a day ahead of forecast.
Meanwhile, Hurricane #Humberto has weekend quickly, filling its pressure >34mb in 24 hours for the last three updates.
Yep. The idea that city/state government is going to βmaintain the large, complex infrastructure needed to effectively respond to rare catastrophic events is nonsensical. Having a robust FEMA enables the ongoing maintenance of the needed disaster response infrastructure at a federal level.β
29.09.2025 18:04 β π 53 π 18 π¬ 0 π 1Just checked the latest recon flight from a couple hours ago and sure enough, double eyewalls!
29.09.2025 03:49 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Humberto looks like it's falling apart a bit. The inner eyewall is wobbling a lot even making it appear to have a second non-concentric eye lol
I'd suspect there's an outer eyewall forming and causing the inner structure to be cut off from moisture and is getting weaker.
This is PRECISELY why folks can't take just one forecast and use it as gospel over a period of time.
The models for #TD9 were super tricky, and 48 hours ago we were thinking about a landfall in the Carolinas as a possibility.
Now it's going to take a literal right turn!

27.09.2025 22:17 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I think there's something to be said for the present proximity of a strong anti-cyclone. Right now, it's south of a decent ridge extending from a 1029mb Azores high, so all that sinking air is moving a lot of mass out of the upper levels for Humberto to expand its upper anti-cyclone.
