Well I had intended to do it but my neighbor said that was crazy because dahlias in Virginia are just like azaleas - you cannot kill them. But I’ve proven her wrong!

I’m lazy & don’t dig up
my tubers. My only consistent overwinterers are Fleural & Boom Boom. My Fleural tubers have been in the ground for 5+ years. But in that time I’ve lost: Cafe au Lait, Peaches & Cream, Belle of Barmera, Shiloh Noelle and 2 previous attempts at Thomas Edison due to hard winters

Also, in our gardening zone (7a) it won’t overwinter. I tried. They died.

We 🩷 Dorset Dahlias

It needs legit full sun. And the stalks aren’t as strong as other varieties so it needs really good staking or the branches just snap off and die.

This is my third attempt to grow Thomas Edison. But so glad I kept trying!

Mine are from all over (Etsy, local garden centers, you name it.) The stronger varieties (Fleural, Cornel, Boom Boom, etc.) seem to do fine wherever I buy them. So my rec is to just buy tubers that are described as hardy or prolific bloomers. They seem to be fine wherever they’re from.

My new favorite dahlia: Thomas Edison
