Overnights - ABC listen
On Overnights, there's great music and interesting guests from Australia and all parts of the globe.
I was up early this morning to speak to Trevor Chappell on ABC Overnights about Australian participation in the South African (Boer) War. It was fun to go back and talk about my older research!
Itโs here if you want to listen (It starts at about 2:24:00). www.abc.net.au/listen/progr...

Iโm so looking forward to this history walk with a group of my friends and colleagues from the University of Newcastle, part of the Newcastle Writers Festival & only a few days before my book Quiet Protest: A New History of Activism in the Vietnam War is published (there will be early copies there!)

I cannot be party to silencing writers, which is why I am resigning as director of Adelaide Writersโ Week | Louise Adler
Cancelling the Australian Palestinian author Randa Abdel-Fattah weakens freedom of speech and is the harbinger of a less free nation
The self-removal of artist-activist bodies from the AWW has created some of the most impactful quiet(er) protest seen in this country in recent years, and shows us the extent to which we believe that freedom of speech is a core democratic right.

government policy but at least it should make peopleโฆrespect the protesters and try to understand why they feel as they doโฆAfter all, if you were rich enough to afford a Drysdale and you learned that Russell Drysdale was right against the war, itโd make you want to find out why, wouldnโt it?' This list of esteemed authors who have withdrawn from the Adelaide Writers Festival emphasizes how such responses can, in fact, strengthen social movements, illustrated by these words by musician Marian Henderson before Arts Vietnam Week of October 1968: 'It mightnโt have much effect onโฆ (1/2)

Sand on the right and a curved beach with tents and people dotted here and there. The water is very clear and cliffs are at the back of the image. There are no clouds in the sky.
A very Australian beach scene, a photo of Newcastle Beach taken yesterday, my last day of a 3 week work-free summer holiday. I post this to mark an excellent, restful break with wonderful friends & family (and sadness that I am currently sitting in front of my computer again). Happy new year all!

The figurative gods are looking out for me. I am writing a book review that I thought needed to be 800 words, but I have written 1010 (and will be difficult to reduce). I just checked the original request and, lo and behold, they've actually asked for 1000 words. Me right now:

Nanas joined a packed public gallery today at NSW Parliament House as Kobi Shetty gave a powerful second reading to repeal NSw protest laws. NSW stands condemned by the UN, human rights lawyers and organisations for its anti-protest laws. The worst in Australia.
