Oregon leaders remain concerned for Gresham family detained in Texas Immigration officers arrested the Crespo-Gonzalez family at Portland Adventist Health last month, as the family sought care for their 7-year-old daughter.

โ€œThe 7-year-old Gresham girl who was detained on her way to see the doctor last month is only eating bread with mayonnaise and her family has to purchase water because the water provided at the Texas detention center where theyโ€™re being held is undrinkable.โ€

Today was a triumph for Portlandโ€™s working class and our shared struggle to get ICE out of our community.

Thousands of Portland workers, mobilized by their unions in conjunction with Portland DSA and Portland Jobs with Justice, rallied and marched today in direct opposition to the federal governmentโ€™s racist campaign of terror against immigrants in Portland.

At the same time, we are outraged โ€” but not surprised โ€” at the federal governmentโ€™s response to our unity:

Without provocation, federal officers attacked thousands of union members, families with children, and community members with chemical agents, some shooting down from the top of the ICE building.

Hereโ€™s what is clear: The federal government fears organized workers. From the streets to the workplace, we will fight ICE. They know we have a unique power to defend immigrants, defend workers, and defend Portland. ICE out of Portland!

Thousands of union members staged a nonviolent march today. iCE gassed the crowd of nurses and teaches. The neighborhood is in a cloud. Flash bangs are being fired.

A judge had to issue a court order to ensure ICE provided seizure medication to a detainee, and that detainee still didnโ€™t get their medication.

ICE enforcement is a disability justice issue.

Theyโ€™re a eugenicist movement.

Just got gassed pretty good at the labor union anti-ICE protest in Portland. Massive march, 5-10k strong. Vibes were very much liberal rather than radical. Lots of kids and older folks.

They gassed the whole crowd as soon as it marched on ICE, in broad daylight.

I just got tear gassed along with thousands of union members, many of whom had their families with them. Federal agents at the ICE facility tear gassed children. We must abolish ICE, DHS, and we must have prosecutions. I expect to see enforcement of our city code prohibiting the use of tear gas.

Just experienced the most intense tear gassing of my life by federal officers outside the ICE facility in Portland where marchers gathered. There was no fast exit as they indiscriminately threw loads of gas and flash bangs. Children were in the crowd screaming. @oregoncapitalchronicle.com

Suzana Vuljevic reviews THE OLD FIRE (@summitbooks.bsky.social) by Elisa Shua Dusapin and translated by Aneesa Abbas Higgins. Vuljevic explores the depiction of silence in the novel and considers how we become disconnected from the people we love.
