Along with a point value for each planetary system. Your capital was worth 5 economic points and every other system worth 1. Scout ships cost 2 points/1 turn to build etc. That kept things interesting and spicy.

We would all participate in battles so when the Federation and Klingons went at it we'd get picked for a side and the side with the bigger fleet would get 3 players. We also home brewed some rules for ship yards (capital system and star bases) came up with point value/cost for each ship class.

3 months. Long ago my friends and I played a massive campaign using Federation Space for fleet movements and Starfleet Battles rules and SSD's for ship to ship combat. It took all summer. 5 players total. It was glorious. Weekly sessions lasting on average 6 hours. One sitting? 8 hours, BattleTech.
