The desperately inspirational answer is that we served an idea, and that idea still exists to provide hope. It's hard to see, but the flame has not yet gone out on that idea, and it won't. As long as I'm still alive, so is that idea.

Veterans of OIF/OEF and beyond often ask "What, exactly, did we accomplish?" and now the question is shifting to "What has become of the country we were so willing to serve?"

The profound way these badges and ribbons weigh on me as we watch the guardrails fail, and authoritarianism/kleptocracy rise, in this country is the most surprising part of my service.

Will everyone quit and roll over? The law firms, media companies, universities, government employees. Will you all cling to what you have and hope you can just ride it out, Republic be damned? Shame on all of you who don’t stand up, just remember we will never forget.
