I would say that if you're middle aged and not living in Texas, ask your doctor now whether you should get a booster. Don't wait till it gets to your state and there's some rush on vaccines.

Wrote up something about Techdirt's recent coverage, and why (whether we like it or not) we need to be a "democracy blog" now, rather than just a "tech" blog (not that we've ever been just a tech blog).
This story is *the* story and it impacts everything else.

Gutting Section 230 would HELP giants like Meta & Google, who can afford armies of lawyers. It would devastate community-driven alternatives like Blueksy & Mastodon, and would enable widespread censorship.

Today, a broad coalition of scientific professional societies who represent over 92,000 scientists are speaking out against the politicization and demonization of Federally funded science and government scientist jobs.
It was an honor to help the Union of Concerned Scientists with this! π§ͺπ
Weather and climate data shown on this website and countless others are at risk. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is the U.S. agency responsible for global weather forecasting, hurricane prediction, ocean observation, and many other services vital to public safety. Its satellites, supercomputers, and research teams provide essential data that help us understand our planet and protect lives. On February 27, the new U.S. administration initiated mass firings at NOAA. These actions are unethical and deeply disruptive to the talented scientists and engineers who dedicate themselves to the public good. The firings, along with expected budget cuts, have serious implications for the availability and quality of weather forecasts produced by the United States. They must be reversed immediately. Much of the data on this website is downloaded directly from NOAA's servers. In this environment of uncertainty, access could be disrupted at any time. While I'll strive to keep all features on this website functional and switch to alternative data sources if necessary, some datasets have no substitute if they go offline. If this concerns you, speak up. Share on social media. And if you're in the U.S., contact your representatives. - Cameron
All websites that depend on NOAA data should display something like this.

Seriously if I was like 20-25 years younger I'd be thinking of moving abroad for a bit. I just don't see how any of this works out in the short term.

You have to rebuild all your immunity.
Go to your doc and get your measles antibodies checked. You do not want immune amnesia.

21.02.2025 19:21 β π 41 π 12 π¬ 4 π 1Josh Marshall of the Talking Points Member blog writes: I want to state again what Iβve been saying since November: your health care coverage for Elonβs tax cuts. That is the fundamental fulcrum on which the next two years of American history β and quite possibly many years into the future β will turn. This has always been and will remain fundamentally a battle for public opinion. The issue is not βkitchen table issuesβ versus democracy. The two are fundamentally conjoined. Any effective politics to confront the current moment must join the two together. Because they are joined together. To the extent that βdemocracyβ has no tangible impact on anyoneβs lived experience, it hardly matters. But of course it does impact everyoneβs lived experience in tangible and graphic ways.
