Just read Blue Machine by Helen Czerski πŸ“š This is how you write popular science: engaging, clear, authoritative. Stories, weirdness and passion. It’s about how the sea works - the depths and shallows, the currents, the chemistry, the thermodynamics. An all time favourite. #booksky

β€œPatient-oriented research” means more than a patient on a panel. What does *real* engagement look like? 🧠 buff.ly/1HEMbS6

I'm a scicomms person not a scientist, but my experience working with researchers is that many pubs want to do their own. I think they consider many researchers' idea of 'plain' language is nowhere near plain enough!

Great to see this kind of question getting asked. Are you asking patients and public as well? It's a good way of checking for groupthink and the same old suspects popping up time after time.

The execrable Fi Glover has just said on her national radio show on Times Radio 'let's ignore the science and stick with the headline' after a respected neurologist pointed out the headline was wrong because it was based on a pilot study of 32 people and demonstrated nothing.

That’s what the rest of the world is doing in with trade agreements. That’s how you get out from under narcs - don’t play. MAGA are consciously working to flood the swamp. take up all the bandwidth. Let’s not let them. 2/2

Is there anything #scicomms on here that isn’t overwhelmed by the upshot of the orange toddler’s strop in the US. People are right to shout about it but another reaction has to be that the **rest of us** demonstrate that his tantrums don’t hold sway over the rest of the world. 1/2

The whole 'send out a zillion news releases' model is broken, I agree. But meeting client needs isn't going to change, because if they don't, they go bust. Clients are often woefully naive or paranoid about journalism and need educating too, or don't understand it's not part of their marketing dept.

Sat on both sides of that desk & feel your pain, but what journalists often miss is that a good story is secondary for PRs. It has to hit the client's needs first, and PRs have to meld the two sides. So from your expertise and experience what are 3 would be three short bullets to help PRs?
