Happy World Wetlands Day! π± The ICOS network currently includes 16 wetland stations across Europe, providing long-term and openly accessible greenhouse gas data from these important ecosystems. Scroll through the pictures below to see more pictures from our beautiful wetland stations! π
Happy #WorldWetlandDay! I'm pleased to be back at North Inlet today, remembering a warmer time in Sept. 2025 when we sampled our #nitrogen #saltmarsh experimental plots (you can see the boosted plant height from the fertilizer) for the last time, including pulling these belowground biomass cores.

To protect and restore these vital ecosystems, we need stronger wetland science education.
Understanding how wetlands function, from peatlands to marshes, is essential for training the next generation to safeguard biodiversity, water quality, and climate resilience.
On #WorldWetlandsDay, Iβm celebrating the beautiful wetlands here in QuΓ©bec. They cover~18 million ha of the landscape and encompass a wide variety of different types.
#Wetlands everywhere are critical ecosystems - they store carbon, regulate water, and sustain biodiversity! We must protect them!
Wow! These are very cute π

Traditional knowledge has long guided the sustainable use of wetlands. As the Convention on Wetlands marks 55 years, #WorldWetlandsDay2026 calls on us to protect wetlands and honour cultural heritage.

A black-and-white Avocet stands motionless in shallow wetland water, facing the camera with an unimpressed expression, as if waiting for an explanation. Its long blue-grey legs are partly submerged and its thin, upturned bill curves slightly to one side. Gentle ripples surround the bird, with soft, blurred wetland tones in the background.
Respect Wetlands. Or explain it to this Avocet.

And of course thanks to @ramsar.org for spreading the news around the world that wetlands are relevant!

A large creek in a salt marsh. It is low tide, so there are some mudflats visible in the creek. the creek banks are vegetated with a tall grass typical for salt marshes. Two people stand in the background looking at the creek.
Happy World Wetlands Day!
I'm very proud to be able to contribute to the protection of ~10k ha of salt marshes in the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park with my work.
They are a very valuable habitat for plants and animal species, and important carbon sink.

Restoring nature and reversing biodiversity loss are urgent societal challenges. Utrecht University invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Wildlife Ecology and Nature Restoration. In this role, you contribute to help solve these challenges through research and education by linking fundamental wildlife ecology to biodiversity recovery and nature restoration. As an Assistant Professor, you will join a young, enthusiastic team that is eager to make an impact. You will help strengthen the teamβs mission to connect fundamental wildlife ecology with the challenges of nature restoration in human-dominated multifunctional forest landscapes, especially in north-western Europe. Your research will focus on restoration-relevant themes, such as wildlife responses to anthropogenic change, the effectiveness of conservation interventions, and the contribution of wildlife to biodiversity recovery and nature restoration. Close collaboration with colleagues within and beyond Utrecht University is an important part of this role, as well as building sustainable partnerships with conservation practitioners and policymakers. You will combine fieldwork, experiments and biomonitoring (e.g. using sensor technologies) with laboratory, statistical and theoretical approaches. There is ample opportunity to initiate research projects and to acquire funding. In education, you will teach in the Biology programs, develop and coordinate a new course, and supervise research projects of BSc, MSc and PhD students.
Are you a PhD-level #wildlife ecologist committed to research and education for #biodiversity and nature restoration?

When you visit the #saltmarsh @pie-lter.bsky.social in spring, you can see large slabs of #sediment on the marsh platform, which have been deposited there over the winter by ice rafting: ice freezing to the mudflat, and the frozen mud being carried around by winds and tides onto the marsh (April 4).
