Sure looking like the TX lege is setting up (Dem and GOP) local gov officials to take the fall for the floods while making further limiting their ability to raise and spend money on services a top priority during this special session

❗️Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice asks #txlege to consider changing land use & property tax policies, saying they should consider:

-regulatory authority in the ETJ
-negative effects of property tax & spending caps

The San Antonio Flood of 1921 Held Lessons We Refuse to Learn There is nothing unknown about what triggered the brutal Hill Country flood of 2025 and so many others dating back to the nineteenth century.

Featured story: We forget what we don’t want to remember. While I understand that impulse, there are dangers embedded in our forgetfulness. This is especially true for anyone living in Flash Flood Alley, or what we like to call the Hill Country. www.texasobserver.org/san-antonio-...

On day one a pipe burst in the ceiling of the auditorium where they were giving the exam, dousing the table immediately below in water. The people sitting there were completely undone; everyone else kinda looked up for a second then back to their exam papers

It’s now less than three hours before the first Texas redistricting committee hearing and, as of yet, there are no official draft maps for public to engage with and/or comment on. #txlege

For low profile bills like this, the governor's veto statements are typically conclusory and ideological in a superficial way. This one just said the data to run a warning system should be collected by locals and not the state, even though the state is the one with the capacity to collect it

Texas Lawmakers Largely Ignored Recommendations Aimed at Helping Rural Areas Like Kerr County Prepare for Flooding Texas lawmakers’ inaction on flood prevention often hits rural and economically disadvantaged communities the hardest, experts said.

NEW: Over the years, Texas legislators have declined to pass at least three bills that would create siren or alert systems, a tool that Kerr County officials tried to secure for years before the July 4 flooding.

The #txlege joint committee on disaster and flood planning is meeting in the Capitol on Weds starting at 9am. They are hearing invited testimony primarily from the river authorities and possibly some other water agencies/associations.

FYI in case you want to tune in.
