All of my complaining about mediocre White guys shouldn't be read to suggest that White guys generally shouldn't still be under consideration. Fundamentally, it's the mediocrity that's the danger. And especially portraying that mediocrity as "safety" or "normality" in a candidate.

Democrats are worried about nominating another Harris, but that's not the danger. What will doom us is nominating another Biden.

I'm deeply worried that we will nominate another mediocre White guy (who, to be clear, will still win. Whoever the Dem nominee is, they will win)... and then set us up for another loss in 2032--and even worse, do so in a way that pins the failure on someone like AOC.

We cannot let the Democratic Party fall into this trap. And more broadly, we cannot fall into the trap of letting our fear trick us into nominating "Safe" candidates. Because "Safe" candidates can't win re-elections, and can't carry the coalition.

That's the "Glass Cliff" effect. A sort of counterpart to the Glass Ceiling in which organizations are much more likely to appoint women leaders when they are already in crisis, often setting up those women leaders for failure.

Truth is, we went with the mediocre white guy candidate in 2020, and look where that got us: Biden failed to hold Trump accountable for his crimes, stalled out almost immediately, and lost an election because he was out-of-touch in so many ways.

Republicans under Trump are so unpopular that the Democratic candidate is going to win no matter who they are. So now is when you swing for the fences.
