This is a comic about two characters from the book La Reine Margot (Queen Margot), Coconnas, a red-haired and hot-headed catholic noble man, and de La Mole, a dark haired protestant. In this scene that takes place during St Barthelemy, Coconnas is the first to draw blood by stabbing de La Mole with a dagger while yelling "Touché!", and de La Mole is quick to respond with his blade by slashing his cheek. At first, the scene is in grey/blueish tones - it's night, and the characters can't recognize each other at first. But then, La Mole yells "Lâche!" (Coward!), and Coconnas recognizes the man he sought to kill the chapter before, but also the man who was his friend before the beginning of the massacre. At this sight, Coconnas enrages.

Here we see de La Mole's reaction to Coconnas' agression. He seems almost trapped, one against many, retrieving into the shadows of a corridor while swords are pointed at him. His shoulder's hurt, blood drips from his wound and his hair.

The characters Coconnas (a red haired, tall and strong bearded man) and La Mole (dark haired, with a small mustache and white clothes) from La Reine Margot ( Alexandre Dumas ). Both of them are fighting, as you can see Coconnas almost embracing La Mole threateningly in his tense arms with a furious look on his face. He’s almost gripping the clothes on La Mole’s back with one hand, while the other holds a dagger ready to strike. Coconnas bleeds from his chest, while La Mole bleeds from his shoulder. La Mole looks frightened but stared right back into Coconnas’ eyes. They’re about to fall, as La Mole is already losing his balance.

The character La Mole from La Reine Margot (Dumas) holding a flower (hawthorn) and resting his head on his hand. He's a dark haired man with blue eyes wearing white clothes with some golden embroidery lining his collar and sleeves, a red coat with a black collar rested on his shoulder and a black hat with a white feather. He looks lost in thought, smiling a little. The background is a page from "The Praise of Folly" from Erasmus, specifically a small text about forgiving friends and lovers and being blind to their imperfections narrated from the personification of Folly. This book was important to the Protestant Reformation as it is criticises the Church, while the flower La Mole holds supposedly bloomed during Saint Barthelemy. Of course all of this holds a meaning, since La Mole forgave his friend Coconnas for attempting to murder him several times this night as he was protestant, and Coconnas a catholic. I also chose this text as the folly of love is strongly related to La Mole and Coconnas and their troubles, as Cupido is mentioned as the father and creator of all bonds.

Finally, Catherine de Medici is feeding something.. unidentified to her small greyhound. Weird move, Catherine…

This scene is pretty awful as the king, Charles, discovers his dog (his best friend) has been poisoned and has died trying to comfort itself by cuddling an object belonging to him. He’s holding his dead dog close to him, enraged but unable to scream and realizing he’s also going to die from the same thing.

This is a comic illustrating a small scene from the book Queen Margot from Dumas. King Charles IX of France retains king Henry of Navarre in his appartements and tries to force him to convert to catholicism after ordering the St Bartholomew massacre. The room is lit from the fires in the city, making the page look red. "You have to understand me, Henriot!" Asks the king. "I understand, sire." Replies Henry. "Well ?" "Well, sire", I do not see why the king of Navarre should not do what so many gentlemen and poor folks have done. For if they all die, poor unfortunates, it is because the same terms have been proposed to them which your Majesty proposes to me, and they have refused, as I refuse." Charle's expression changes into a fierce and savage one. "What!" Yells Charles, gripping his arm. "Do you believe that I have taken the troubles to offer the mass to those whose throats we are cutting yonder?"
