Opting out of a commitment that is no longer congruent with your safety, stability, or goals is choosing to have you own back instead of pleasing & appeasing someone else-- which is the backbone of realistic trauma recovery.

It's the right thing. I promise.

For trauma survivors, it takes more "grit" & "character" to back off & rest & set limits than it does to just go w/ our old programming & "push through" fatigue or pain. Real "self discipline" for us isn't in exhaustion-- it's in slowing down when that's the intelligent decision.

Reasons to Live Through the Apocalypse

Sunrises. People you have still to meet and laugh with. Songs about love, peace, anger, and revolution. Walks in the woods.
The smile you exchange with a stranger when you experience beauty accidentally together. Butterflies. Seeing your grandparents again. The moon in all her forms, whether half or full. Dogs.
Birthdays and half-birthdays. That feeling of floating in love.
Watching birds eat from bird feeders. The waves of happiness that follow the end of sadness. Brown eyes. Watching a boat cross an empty sea. Sunsets. Dipping your feet in the river. Balconies.
Cake. The wind in your face when you roll the car window down on an open highway. Falling asleep to the sound of a steady heartbeat. Warm cups of tea on cold days. Hugs. Night skies. Art museums. Books filled with everything you do not yet know.
Long conversations. Long-lost friends. Poetry.

I wrote this on one of the darkest days of my life. It gave me an anchor to hold onto.

When I was a children's librarian I ended up with glitter on my pants on day 1, and I hadn't seen or touched any glitter at all

This is why wealthy Americans, like Elon Musk, want middle class Americans to be obsessed with worrying about immigrants stealing from their piece of the zero-sum economic pie.

If you're looking for a place to do some work, the public library is like a coffeeshop where you don't need to buy anything and there's a lot more space and you can stay as long as you like and you don't get any coffee.

Conservatives have gotten so accustomed to using Christianity as en excuse for their personal prejudices that it is so discombobulating when Jesus's words are used *against* those same personal prejudices.

Remember that airport rules apply, starting tomorrow and whenever you need them for the next 4 years. Do you need extra carbs on your carbs or cheese on your cheese? That shiny ink/super soft yarn/excellent smelling candle? The occasional day drink or afternoon gummy?

It is a misconception that trauma survivors are fixated on the past. We never want to think of the past ever again. We do backflips trying to NOT think about the past. We're actually really good at denying the past even happened.

Problem is: the past isn't quite through w/ us.

For folks in the US, I can't emphasize enough how important it is to support queer art over the next few years. Project 2025 seeks to label queer art pornographic and those who make or distribute it pornographers and sex offenders. We can't roll over and accept that. Queer art will live forever.

You get to have needs & preferences in your relationships. Trauma Brain will try to tell you you "have" to tolerate lots of things in relationships because "who else would want you"-- but you're more worthy, desirable, & deserving than your conditioning is letting you realize.
