Let's be careful not to diminish kids' self-motivation for writing through rubrics that use extrinsic motivators.

Just had this comment posted in one of my online classes. I see this kind of reflection a lot. It's so true. We don't mean to demotivate with incentives, but that's just what happens in the long run.

Reflections on Final Exams After a Half Marathon Race
One test shouldn't try to capture a semester's learning any more than one race should define a season of running.
I ran a half marathon race this past weekend, and it got me thinking about final exams. Should one big test really have much (if any) bearing on how we evaluate a student's learning from a semester or year? leadinggreatlearning.com/reflections-...

I'm working on a writing project about kids who struggle in school. I'd like to tell stories of famous/successful adults who struggled in school. Does anyone have suggestions of people whose stories I should explore--famous people who had a hard time in school?

Be Curious, Not Judgmental
How might we follow Ted Lasso's advice to be curious, not judgmental? And how might this help us be better educators?
It's so easy to make assumptions, react emotionally, and slide into judgment when a student says or does something hurtful, isn't it? When that happens, try to channel your inner Ted Lasso. leadinggreatlearning.com/be-curious-n... #tedlasso

Yes! I often encourage students to try to turn off their "inner censor" and just write. As a writer, it's not helpful to try to write well...that just increases anxiety. Remember the old adage: perfect is the enemy of good.

Be kind to others. Help those in need. Absorb others' negative energy and don't radiate it back out into the world.

I facilitated a staff meeting today about supporting kids who often get "in trouble" in school. We had a cool discussion about why kids break rules. Some reasons: a need for autonomy, peer approval (belonging), boredom, and being distracted. What are some other reasons that come to mind?
