I hate this sensation of constant time poverty - where I am just meeting my obligations and there’s no time left to rest or to regroup or to be still in nature or do art

It is not at all. Where we need to be is different where companies need to be to double their worth. One should not mix one with the other.

Downplaying your achievements is not the antidote to appearing arrogant.

Humility is acknowledging your weaknesses, not denying your strengths. Generosity is elevating others, not diminishing yourself.

Owning your success doesn't make you a narcissist—it makes you a role model.

No taxation without representation. If our representatives (ie, Congress) have no authority over the Treasury, why should citizens be compelled to pay into it? Asking for 335 Million friends.

Politeness is not the same as kindness.

Being polite is saying what makes people feel good today. Being kind is doing what helps people get better tomorrow.

When the norm is politeness, people withhold disagreement and criticism. When the norm is kindness, people speak their minds respectfully.

A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Blue and Green are flopped down on the floor, cuddling on top of each other.
Green: Have you figured out what you want yet?
Blue: A little hut with a garden in the woods, with a lake nearby.

A vision of Blue rowing a garden with a long-handled hoe, wearing a straw hat.
Blue, narrating: To spend my summers fishing, foraging, and growing vegetables

Another vision of Blue, now admiring his row of assorted cans and jars.
Blue, continuing to narrate: Drying, canning and preserving enough to last the winter.

Back to present day, Blue and Green are laying down in the exact same spot and position as earlier.
Green: I meant for your birthday.
Blue: Oh. You don't have to get me anything.

When Nazi Germany invaded Denmark in World War II, the Hungarian chemist George de Hevesy dissolved the gold Nobel Prizes of Max von Laue and James Franck in aqua regia to prevent the Nazis from stealing them. He placed the resulting solution on a shelf in his laboratory at the Niels Bohr Institute. After the war, he returned to find the solution undisturbed and precipitated the gold out of the acid. The Nobel Society then recast the Nobel Prizes using the original gold.

We pay too much attention to the most confident voices—and too little attention to the most thoughtful ones.

Conviction is not a sign of credibility. Speaking assertively is not a substitute for reflecting deeply.

It's better to learn from complex thinkers than smooth talkers.

But why is this relevant for climate? A 🧵

Fun fact: it was over 1,000(!) years ago that someone (a Persian astronomer) made the first known drawing of another galaxy!

Described as “a cloud” at the mouth of a fish (Arabic constellation), it’s the Andromeda Galaxy.
