IT'S MY FAVE... i've tried a lot of different ways to render it and i'm still not 100% satisfied with it (i want it to look more dramatic and surreal with big chunks of color and light, like the wings are made of diamonds or something) but i think the ways i've done it are still cool and pretty too🥰

gus is good at seeing through hawthorne's posturing of course but he isn't exactly in a state of mind to do it effectively for most of this comic, and even when he understands what's being said to him, he's too crazed to follow orders, so. you know. it's only a Little bit hawthorne's own fault,

there's a bit in this comic where what he's TRYING to say is "i don't have the energy/stamina to keep fighting with you like this right now so i need you to lie still" but what he actually says is "My patience is not infinite" as if it's a threat and not him needing accommodation for his disability😂

he's good at playing it off like he's not trying to talk around his physical limitations, and sometimes you can read between the lines if you're looking for it, but sometimes he has to reach pretty far to find an action statement that fits the idea he's trying to convey and it gets muddy

most of the time i get around this by avoiding "i can't" type statements and have him say "i will have to" type statements instead. i.e. the sentiment is "i can't carry you if you faint on this hike", so he says instead "i'll have to leave you behind". no negative statements, only action statements

here's a fun little tidbit from this comic that may not be obvious when you read it: i struggled a lot with Hawthorne's dialogue because he doesn't admit weakness whenever possible, but in a story where there's a lot demanded of him physically, he sort of can't avoid addressing his disability

Make the thing you’re embarrassed to make, the thing that feels “too much” because otherwise we get drowned in a sea of cowardly work made by a button
