The DMG didn't exist yet when I started gaming in '79. Most groups were playing a weird mashup of OD&D, Holmes Basic D&D, and AD&D.
My first group had a lot of house rules, and much of it was photocopies of Arduin Grimoires 1-3.
This was my introduction to "hacking" D&D.
