Map showing the Antarctic anomaly of the July 2025 sea-ice concentration relative to the mean July ice concentration in 1981-2010. Especially, the sea ice around the Antarctic Peninsula, and in the King Haakon VII sea, shows large areas of negative anomaly (red colour).
Source data is OSI SAF sea-ice concentration CDR v3.0.
The line graph displays the monthly sea-ice extent in the Antarctic for July from 1979 to 2025. In 2025, the July extent ranked as the third lowest on record.
Source data is OSI SAF sea-ice index.
Disregarding the extreme and record-low sea-ice extent in Antarctic the last two years, this year's July extent is exceptionally low, ranking as the 3rd lowest on record.
The July extent over the last four years differs significantly from that of the previous four decades.

With the announcement that the U.S. SSMIS data will continue to be distributed after 31 July, the Sea-Ice Index will continue to be produced as usual, based on SSMIS-derived sea-ice concentration, but our plan remains to upgrade the index with data from on the alternative sensor AMSR2. Stay tuned!

Global Sea Ice Concentration interim climate data record, release 3 | OSI SAF
Until 31 July 2025, the Sea-Ice Index was based on our Sea-Ice Concentration Interim Climate Data Record using SSMIS. Last 16 days are based on the fast-track data generated faster than the nominal ones, that may differ slightly.

Line graph showing sea-ice extent in 2025 for the Northern Hemisphere. In blue is the original sea-ice index (SII) v2.2, which is based on SSMIS. In orange is the similar SII based on AMSR-2 instead. And in red is the calibrated AMSR-based SII, which will be used to extend the SII from August 2025.

How do we at @osi-saf.eumetsat.int prepare the Sea-Ice Index for the potential End-of-Life of SSMIS after July?
1. Compute indexes from AMSR-2 instead
2. Develop a calibration tuned over 2021-2025
3. Continue the index time series with calibrated AMSR-based indexes from August 2025.

This is clearly visible in the new AMSR-based sea-ice concentration product (OSI-438), but is less visible in the SSMIS-based product (OSI-430) due to its lower spatial resolution.
