#JournalEditor Chronicles
I've been a journal editor for more than a year now and I often get very constructive and meticulous peer reviewers with substantive comments. A week ago, I got the shortest two-word comment to authors ever. π
Social determinants of health (SDOH) are often overlooked in policy-making, leading to individual-focused health initiatives.
In @thelancetph.bsky.social, authors call for a shift from individual accountability to systemic solutions to address SDOH: tinyurl.com/2s44vyuc

It is always weird to hear my own voice. This was my first podcast (where I was the one being interviewed) and it was fun! Should I have spoken more about my work? Maybe but in this kind of context, I think it is more appropriate to talk about the process and not just my "outputs."

Excited to share my case study on the framing and perceptions of #alcohol industry #CSR in the #Philippines.
It calls for the need to regulating the marketing of alcohol industry CSR to protect alcohol policies from industry influence.

Warning: If you come from the Global South where university libraries have limited resources, this news will make you weep. The article may induce deep sadness and shock. As a former research staff at NUS, this is both disappointing and disgusting.

I ended up not registering for this conference because of the need to apply for a visa, the exorbitant registration fee (even as LMIC) & out-of-pocket expense that is not justifiable for conference participation. Conference organizers need to move away from Global North conference venues.
20.05.2025 14:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Question is: Why even give the US a platform in the WHA when they have left the WHO? Their isolationist policy removed them from the table. Does anyone think that the pandemic agreement would have passed if the US was there?

There are 49 members of the Philippine delegation. Are they all supporting the DoH Secretary in his role as WHA president? I understand why officials under the Bureau of International Health Cooperation are there because it is their mandate. But why do they need 3 delegates from PhilHealth?
19.05.2025 07:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0#AcademicLife I was about to register for a conference where I will present on behalf of a university in the π΅πwhere I am a research fellow. The system slapped me with a β¬900 fee! I did not continue to payment. Should I have registered with the PH university's address and not my address in π³π΄?
17.04.2025 20:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Conferences in the Global North with no hybrid options (in-person + online participation) are testament to the the inequality among researchers. When the visa hurdle is high, some may be rejected. Those who get to attend get more exposure and opportunities to network for future collaborations.2/2
09.04.2025 19:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0#AcademicLife When your passport is from the Global South but you live in the Global North and the conference you want to attend is in the Global North, often you still need a visa which requires a few months of processing and tons of paperwork, with your passport held hostage by an embassy.1/2

This tactic is similar/adjacent to what Heineken does with their 0.0 ads in Formula 1. The 0.0 looks like an afterthought given the prominent display of the original Heineken logo with the red star.
The Global Alcohol Policy Alliance is a global NGO recently registered in Switzerland. It works towards promotong evidence-based alcohol policy globally. I serve as part of GAPA's Advisory Council.
