🐑🍐In Wapello, IA, Kathy Dice & Tom Wahl have been managing, breeding, & harvesting fruit & nut trees at Red Fern Farm since the early 90s. Wildlife biologists by training, they manage their fruit wonderland as an ecosystem, with mature chestnut trees anchoring the farm design.

🌰🐷In Viola, WI, Mark Shepard has practiced “restoration agriculture” for 30 seasons, on 106 acres first bought as degraded corn-soy fields. New Forest Farm grows nearly any tree crop imaginable, with animals grazing below, as a foundational model for integrated agroforestry.

🐑🍎In Buchanan, MI, Emily Macdonald raises sheep on tree-covered pastures that were once an apple orchard and row cropfield farmed in the 70s. At Greenfield Grazing, she’s restoring her formerly degraded landscape and imagining how to expand agroforestry practices on her farm.

🐷🌳In Crothersville, IN, Nate Brownlee co-stewards Nightfall Farm in its 13th season raising animals on tree-shaded pastures. Inspired first by an intense need for shade in the summer heat, he’s seen great soil health benefits & now cares for thousands of animals at a time.

🫐🌱In Elk Mound, WI, Steve Brunn started Green Horizon Farm in 2021 to grow nuts, berries, and native prairie species to restore soil health and pollinator habitat. As his farm matures, it’s a model for diversified cold-weather agroforestry for small farmers in the region.

🌰🌳In Urbana, IL, Kaitie Adams runs
@savannainstitute.bsky.social's Agroforestry Demonstration Farm, stewarding 11 windbreak systems & 3 alley cropping systems to understand regional best practices. In the heart of the Corn Belt, her team shows farmers an alternative vision of what’s possible.

🌰 sat on a roundtable hosted by the House Climate Solutions Caucus
🏛 met with offices representing IA, MI, and IN
🌳 talked about technical assistance and local support with two USDA divisions
🤝 met with Agriculture Committee staff in both the House and Senate.

Last week, Carbon180 brought four Midwest farmers to talk with policymakers on the Hill and at USDA about the challenges and opportunities of agroforestry on marginal lands, with the goal of grounding future policy in on-the-field realities.
