In EF Benson’s Lucia’s Progress there’s massive speculation about engender Major Mapp-Flint shares his wife’s bedroom, or is consigned to her dressing room.

When they all go to stay at their posh friend’s houses, they married guests get a bedroom and dressing room, and the husband’s sleep in the dressing room…

I always wondered this with 1920/30s “posh folk” fiction. Did men really sleep in their wives dressing rooms?

Ooh. That reminded me, I passed my maths by just memorising stuff for the exam (formulas, I think). Then it left. I did the same for history, memorised dates. Couldn’t tell you any of them now. I am hopeless at maths BUT I am really good at memorising numbers. I could reel off account numbers, etc.

And languages are hopeless

The maths stuff resonates. I do not know which way up division or fractions should be. Time and times tables never stuck. Thank goodness for calculators.

This reminds me of how Duolingo works, gamifying the system isn’t too difficult (if you can afford slack time of course). Given the names and photos compared to actual delivery people on some apps, I suspect most users do this already.
