I know better than to intervene in U.S. regional boundary-drawing. That is a good way to start fights I can't finish.

(I am a transplant from West Virginia, where we all gritted our teeth and smiled when people gushed about how much they loved Richmond, so I do get wanting to be called the west of something)

When I moved to Buffalo, I was unready for how EXTREMELY SINCERELY people here did not like to be called "upstate New York"! Apparently their preferred term is "western New York," so I try to honor that when I talk about where I live.

Don’t tell @premeemohamed.com I said so but this book is so brilliant and devastating my brain didn’t know what to do. The story is entertaining af but how she digs into pacifism and violence had me self-reflecting in an elemental and uncomfortable and cathartic way, like therapy. She’s so f’n GOOD.

Given the overt attempts to erase certain histories from public spaces...well, I hope people are taking steps to preserve their local knowledge.

You can write books that are not for public consumption, that chronicle your specific family or village history.

You can keep your own archives.

As with all love, this doesn't mean seeing it as perfect and without flaw. It means seeing your work as inherently worthy of effort, and of being loved--as capable of being changed and changing others. As something that deserves to exist.

Someday, I hope that you can love yourself that way, too.

In all creative work, you have to love your work more than you hate yourself.

Yeah--I know I'm just wistful for the LJ/DW communities of yore, but ... I am wistful for them! I do think that the structure that they offered was valuable for enabling a particular kind of horizontal, interactive fannish community that felt important to me! (And these communities still exist!)

Creation is a communal act. It is done from within a community; it is shaped by that community; the act of reception is a necessary collaboration in creation. Professionalization can be a lonely experience. I wish fan communities grappled more with the consequences of professionalizing fan creators.

I've heard that this is a common feeling for writers and artists in fandom now, that they're treated as ~content creators~ providing a service to the fannish community rather than as fellow members of the community who are sharing in the joy of collaborative creation. And that makes me sad.

What I miss most about writing fanfiction is how (in my day) writers and readers thought of themselves as in community with each other. I do think that professional writers need to see themselves as part of a reading community, but the structure of professionalizing often creates a power imbalance.

My first Stephen King book was Desperation, which as I understand it is not a common first Stephen King book, and it has irretrievably colored my experience of all of his other works
