The bill would limit require that citizens register only at county election boards, eliminating online, mail, and BMV registration opportunities.

Married women whose names don’t match their birth certificates may be required to present proof of their name change from documents that may be difficult to obtain.

SB 153 currently in committee in the legislature would further and unnecessarily disenfranchise voters. It would require individuals to provide proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote or updating their voter registration.

Of course, those districts still have to hold elections. You can’t create Republican seats; they have to be won. An unintended outcome of gerrymandering maybe that Republican votes will be diluted. 2025 election results suggest that possibility.

Redistricting is supposed to reflect the will of the voters. If Republicans win 55% to 45% over Democrats in Ohio, there should be eight red and seven blue districts. The new map creates 12 Republican leaning and 3 Democrat leaning districts.

After dodging for months the requirement to redraw unconstitutional congressional districts, Republicans finally presented a new districting map which increases the Republican hold on the state.

Several recent developments in the state legislature speak to Republicans determination to remain firmly in power.
