City Raccoons Are Evolving to Look More Like Pets City-dwelling raccoons seem to be evolving a shorter snoutโ€”a telltale feature of our pets and other domesticated animals

Welcome back to #fossilfriday

Here is the crinoid Arthroacantha carpenteri with a Platycerid snail attached. These snails are Coprophagous which means they ate fecal matter. The snail would attached to the anal chimney of the crinoid and would feed on the waste.

I'm about 70% through it, and Grossman's wonderful writing is the only thing that has made reading about such horrible things tolerable right now.

Two books are propped upright against a wooden cabinet, titled "The Cicadas of North America" and "The Social Wasps of North America". Both books show many colorful examples of the respective insects on their covers. Various holiday ribbons, garlands, and lights are strewn about the edges and foreground of the photo, which I shamelessly pilfered from my mom's attic. The text at the top reads "FREE SHIPPING ON ALL QUALIFIED ORDERS".

Illustration of an Exogone species a tiny (usually <0.5cm) polychaete worm. It reproduces by attaching its eggs to the side if its body, two per segment, and then the young develop from there and stay attached to the parent. No larval stage, just mini worms growing from mummy's feet. Illustration from an 19th century paper/book by ร˜rstedt. See https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Syllidae_Externe-Gestation.jpg

Polychaetes do well in the weirdo department. Behold Ramisyllis, living in the labyrinth of sponge channels and consequently having adopted a branching body form. Or Exogone, who grows its babies from its feet. Because why not.

Ira Berlin noted that in the lower South, the chaos led to effectively the greatest emancipation event before the Civil War. Georgiaโ€™s enslaved population fell by *two-thirds* during the Revolution as the enslaved liberated themselves in the absence of strong authority holding them down. But. (1)

a small fish of the family percidae, with a snub nose, and multicolored scales, primarily brown or whiteish, with lines of red scales near its belly, splotches of dark brown scales along its dorsal area and where the lateral line would be (if darters had lateral lines), and a tinge of turqouise on its fins. Dorsal fins are primarily red.

In what I can only describe as the most-on-the-nose thing I've encountered in my career, nameless, faceless AI-slop enablers want to build a 1,200 MW data center that will, according to a Yale biologist, "nuke" the habitat of a tiny beautiful fish found only in Jefferson County, Alabama.

"The gods confound the man who first found out
How to distinguish hours! Confound him, too,
Who in this place set up a sun-dial,
To cut and hack my days so wretchedly
Into small portions. When I was a boy,
My belly was my sun-dial; one more sure,
Truer, and more exact than any of them.
This Dial told me when 'twas proper time
To go to dinner, when I had aught to eat.
But now-a-days, why, even when I have,
I can't fall-to, unless the sun give leave.
The town's so full of these confounded dials,
The greatest part of its inhabitants,
Shrunk up with hunger, creep along the streets."

The point of this isn't that it Republicans are stupid ha ha look at what they say about advil.

It is that Republicans view suffering as a positive, and so they want to ban anything that alleviates suffering, especially things that alleviate suffering in people they hate, like women.
