Lots of sleepers in the 1979 MLB Amateur Draft. Based on career WAR, the three most valuable players selected that year—Orel Hershiser, Brett Butler, and Don Mattingly—were drafted in the 17th, 23rd, and 19th rounds, respectively.

Stealing Home by Eric Nusbaum is an amazing read. Every Dodgers fan, Baseball fan and historian should read it. Super relevant to what is going on in the USA modern day.

Did Karl Ravech just say Mozeliak’s rationale for not calling up McGreevy is the lack of depth behind McGreevy? Makes no sense.

As an impartial observer, this Yankees-Mets game is one of the best I've watched on TV all season. Two really good teams going at it in front of an electric crown with Gary, Ron, and Keith on the call. Feels like a playoff game.

A Baseball Gaijin

Just finished reading "A Baseball Gaijin," by @byaaronfisch.bsky.social. The book tells the fascinating story of Tony Barnette, who played six seasons in Japan, then came back to the US pitched for the Texas Rangers. Great insights into Japanese baseball culture.

The #STLCards have either been shut out or scored one run in 24% of their games. The fact they are seven games above .500 is quite remarkable.

View inside a room labeled PA booth from behind a soundproof glass window. Fans can watch Rangers public address announcer Chuck Morgan do his job from the booth. A small brown conference table is placed near the glass window. The walls are lined with pennants, framed photos and cases of baseballs and other memorabilia. At the doorway is a large blue rug with a blue 1980s-era Rangers logo.

By far the coolest area at Globe Life was the window into the PA booth where fans can watch Chuck Morgan (who moderated a #SABR53 panel yesterday) work during the game.

Rich Reichardt

Rich Reichardt

After the Angels gave Rich Reichardt a record-high signing bonus of $205,000 in 1964, MLB owners instituted an amateur draft the next year to tamp spending. How effective was it? Over the next 22 years, only one player topped Reichardt's bonus. In '87, top pick Ken Griffey Jr. signed for $180,000.

“It was absolutely unreal. It just broke our hearts. I had just lost everything, all those friends.”

On this day in 1946, a bus carrying 15 members of the Spokane Indians tumbled off the highway on Snoqualmie Pass, killing nine players and severely injuring the other six.
