There's a lot of figures of speech in common, and the basic grammar structure is the same since the root language is the same...but some local idioms and pronunciations aren't similar at all, and Yshandre spent a lot of time gesticulating/describing/using variations of "thingy" at first.

I KNOW THIS IS SO FUCKING HYPER-SPECIFIC! But I've had the joy of knowing quite a few people from the many French parts of Canada, and I love the history of all the varieties of French there are, and yeah.

Yshan's Coerthan working-class dialect isn't impenetrable to Gridanians, but it's different!

SPEAKING OF CHIAC - that's how Adellinde talks when she's in Gridania. She's fluent in both the languages that make up that particular dialect; when speaking the equivalent of "English" she sounds like she's from Letterkenny.

Get her and Yshan talking and they're like Xénia Gould and Sami Landri.

Yshandre sounds VERY FRENCH-CANADIAN - specifically, he sounds like a working-class dude from Montréal who moved to Shediac.

Headcanonically, Joual is what the Coerthan branch of the Elezen language "family" sounds like. Gridanian is more like Acadian French, including Chiac.
