The data generated from the game can help us learn which patterns (e.g., linear vs. quadratic vs. etc) are more resilient to noise and easier for the human eye to distinguish.

In the game Apophenia (apophenia.randomplayables.com), the "real pattern" is generated from a user defined mathematical function with added random noise. The real pattern is then hidden in a lineup of plots showing only random noise.

In statistics, graphical inference (GI) helps us rigorously test if what we see in a data viz is a real trend or just a coincidence. A key protocol in GI is the "line-up," where a plot of the real data is hidden among several plots of pure noise.

"Apophenia" is our brain's tendency to perceive meaningful patterns in random, unrelated things.

This "pattern-finding" habit is a huge challenge when we're trying to make sense of data!
