A new study in JAMA shows how proximity to Coldwater Creek, where nuclear waste from the Manhattan Project was improperly stored, affected cancer rates over the decades.
โChildren who lived near a St. Louis creek polluted with radioactive atomic bomb waste from the 1940s through the 1960s were more likely to be diagnosed with cancer over their lifetimes than children who lived farther from the waterway, a new study has found.โ #STL

Fewer trees post-tornado could make summer in north St. Louis hotter โ and more deadly
The powerful May tornado tore down thousands of trees. That could mean the neighborhoods with the most damage feel even hotter as summer approaches.
โTrees can significantly cool urban areas by providing shade and releasing water vapor, research has found. Without them, neighborhoods that were hit by the tornado could feel even hotter this summerโฆโ #STL

Count among the uninsured buildings the approximately 366 buildings owned by the city's land bank that were in the tornado's path, according to the St. Louis Development Corporation. Those properties, an SLDC spokesman says, are "usually in dilapidated conditions or otherwise in serious states of disrepair" when they come into the city's possession and are therefore "generally uninsurable." - Sarah Fenske and Ryan Krull
