Sequential antibiotic exposure restores antibiotic susceptibility
AbstractBackground. The prevalence of antibiotic resistance continues to rise, rendering many valuable antimicrobial drugs ineffective. Pairwise cyclic ant
When bacteria evolve resistance to one antibiotic, they can become more vulnerable to another, a phenomenon called βhypersensitivity.β We find antibiotics that leverage this, and emphasize the importance of the 'directionality' of hypersensitivities for improved therapies.

Why antibiotics are like fossil fuels
They helped create the modern world but are dangerously overused. How can we harness them sustainably?
"Itβs as if every time you took a painkiller for your headache, you increased the chance that somebody else might have to undergo an operation without anaesthetic."
"Itβs hard to imagine a more perfect anti-capitalist commodity than a product whose value depletes every time you use it."

Large scale experimental evolution can help identify trade-offs associated with antibiotic resistance that can have clinical relevance. We use multiple platforms to discover one such trade-off, and describe its mechanism in our report in IJAA.

Compensatory evolution is a menace in the clinic, enabling maintenance of costly resistance determinants. We've built 3-drug evolutionary traps where bacteria compensate for the costs of resistance by reverting back to sensitivity!

De novo evolution of antibiotic resistance to Oct-TriA1
The rise of antimicrobial resistance as a global health concern has led to a strong interest in compounds able to inhibit the growth of bacteria withoβ¦
The idea of "evolution proof" antibiotics is cool, but it will probably remain an idea. We break an evolution proof antibiotic Tridecaptin in this paper. Improved lab evolution platforms will be crucial to help predict resistance.
