Not to mention Spielberg made Munich the same year, dealing with many similar themes. I was shocked at how visible these statements were when I rewatched War of the Worlds; an incredibly strange, bleak film that also accurately predicts, through Cruise’ kids, how that trauma became generational.

I’d suggest revisiting the ‘05 version, which has direct references to the Algerian Revolution, dialogues about how occupations always fail - released at the high of United States occupation of Iraq - and uses 9/11 imagery to make Americans relate to the trauma that they were in fact inflicting.

A way deeper story than it seems on the surface, as it’s about how we want so much to believe in fiction that it can really mess us up - even when the artifice is totally obvious. It’s a comment on Trek’s low-budget brilliance, but also about how we get swept up in even obvious lies.

Ninety percent of it is Ishmael’s digressions on whales and whaling, all webbed together with profound philosophical digging into the idea self and its relationship to others. This, I think, is why Ahab is damned. and Ishmael lives. Ahab rejects connection with the very soul that would save him.

Meanwhile, all Ishmael wants is understanding: of the whale, of God, of humanity, of the self. The novel is the evidence of this.

He cannot see that the whale is (as is nature, as is humanity) animated by the same spirit. That we *are* the Principle. Ahab wants only destruction: destroy God, destroy his pain, destroy himself.

So he externalizes his pain and projects it onto Moby Dick. He doesn’t want to understand it; he wants to destroy it.

He does not want to understand what drives him, or to recognize his struggle reflected in others, where peace might be possible. He is afraid that if he lets go of his rage - as Starbuck repeatedly asks him to do - he will lose himself completely.
