…i think its an interesting possibility for the riddle to act as a key: e.g. if the answer is a phrase (or place name?) whose four words are strongly connected together, and each in order fits one of those (so broad) “not this” categories, confirming the entire phrase like the pins in a yale lock.

my first instinct with “NOT A ROCK, NEVER HOT, NOT FRUIT, NEVER LOCKED” was “oh, thats STONE COLD something something”. ofc “stone cold killer” is unhelpfully the only phrase that comes to mind for those two words; but… 1/2

same approach should work for footsteps. you could cram it into a vec4 if you use xyz for position, z sign for left/right footstep, and remaining z bits for a 1-bit-less-precision angle

vagueness of "send to the gpu" is because exactly how you best do that depends on the engine and/or choice of dx/vulkan/gl and/or minimum gpu generation that you are targeting.

put the footstep info into a buffer that is either mapped so both cpu and gpu can access it, or is copied up to a gpu buffer each frame.

then the shader can access the data from that buffer.

for deciding whether the footsteps should be making snowy noises or not, do a render into a tiny target from a camera looking down from the ankle position, and sample that and send it back to the cpu. you can tolerate the little bit of latency that needs before selecting the footstep sound to play.

what if you dont? for rendering snowy footsteps, move that into the shader too (just send the info on footstep positions+directions up to the gpu).
