Sickening words and ideas. A deeply disturbing but very important read. I think Canadians need to realize that our country also includes this kind of organized white nationalism and hate, and that we need to be doing all we can to work against it.

Don't fund fascism.

The new gnome is welcomed by the residents of The Pocket, who are so thrilled to share their world with Grolly Maru. The book is expertly paced, as they are introduced to sounds (and quiets), friends, foods, and more. The flowing pen and ink drawings burst with nature and emotion.

This picture book biography of the poet Mary Oliver gives a glimpse into her development as a poet- love of nature, words, and solitude. It’s a good introduction, hinting at her poetry but never using the actual poems. Useful jumping off point for poetry studies.

Sperm whales above a free diver on the cover of “In The World of Whales” by Michelle Cusolito, illustrated by Jessica Lanan

What a beautiful book, in so many ways. Beautiful that whales allowed a free-diving human into their world, and that the author & illustrator were able to make this true story into a book. Information and documentation included that teachers will be excited to share.

What a cool teacher Ms. Lee is! In her class, the students track the migration of veeries, learning about the birds while listening to audio and using their imaginations. The illustrations are filled with movement and light. This is an excellent classroom read!

A young Indigenous boy has so many questions, anxieties that keep him awake at night. His mother answers, & helps him sleep. When his grandmother takes him to a march honouring residential school children, he really needs comforting. An important book for all schools & libraries.

Two beaches argue over who gets tucked in, and the moon has to explain how they have to take turns. In an imagined scenario, Pyle explains how tides work (the science is in the back matter). Add some science to storytime, or use in classrooms to discuss ocean tides and the moon.

Frank knits a red hat, a colour the penguins have never seen. When another penguin tries it on and gets eaten by a killer whale, the other penguins want nothing to do with Frank’s hats. A funny book that explores cause and effect. Could work for storytime.

Nothing new here, but it is done well. Two friends need a bit of space but realize that they can “be alone together”. Easy for those learning to read and useful for #SEL ; will also work well for storytime.

Who doesn’t love a fort? In praise of outdoor forts- under trees to indoors under a blanket, poetic text explores the wonder of a fort. The illustrations are filled with nature, and even the indoor forts remind us of the great outdoors. Good storytime choice.

Little Boo is great fun, until it starts to grow up and become obnoxious. When older sib ghost trades a wolf for their little sibling, they realize that Little Boo is not so bad after all. Fun storytime choice, especially for October.

Picture books so often introduce us to the world, as in this one set in a Cuban Jewish community. Romi & her grandmother sew with whatever they have, repurposing items. It is similar to the story of the jacket that becomes smaller & smaller until all that is left is a story.
